Four Frogs on a Log

There is an old story about four frogs who were sitting on a log. Throughout the long, hot day they talked about what they were going to do. As the hours passed, the plans they made became more and more elaborate. Tales of grandeur. Stories of conquest. Plans upon plans.

Finally, three of the frogs stated “I’m going to jump off this log and start my adventure!”

Hours later, how many frogs were still sitting on the log?

Four.

None of the frogs had gone anywhere. No grandeur, no conquests, no adventures.

Do you know why? Because talking about something isn’t doing something. It’s only talking!

I’ve told this story to my kids dozens of times. In fact, we use it as a shorthand way to remind one another to get our butts in gear. As my father-in-law used to say, “Don’t talk about what you’re going to do. Do it!”.

If you’re like me, it’s easy to sit on the log and do nothing other than talk. So how about making today different? Don’t talk about what you’re going to do. Pick something and go do it. Sure, you’ll get wet in the pond, and it may be a bit icky…but at the end of the day you will have done something!
