Things I’m Tired of Doing

There are times when you just reach a point that you want to sit down and give up. I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. My recent post It’s What I Do! addressed that. The post ended on a positive note, but there are some lingering feelings that I do still have. Namely, there are some really lazy things that my family does that drive me crazy. While I don’t mind shouldering more than my share of the load, it would sure be sweet if they would actually pick up some themselves. Literally.

Here’s my list of things that I’m tired of doing around the house that could just as easily be done by the perpatrators of the mess. Does this list look anything like yours?

Things I’m Tired of Doing

  • Turning off lights
  • Cleaning the lint trap in the dryer
  • Putting toilet paper on the roller
  • Loading dishes into an empty dishwasher
  • Closing drawers
  • Picking up cups, dishes, and plates from rooms where they never should have been anyway
  • Shutting doors
  • Picking up laundry deposited next to the laundry bin
  • Emptying half-full cups
  • Turning socks right-side out
  • Picking up jackets, bags, and generally stuff that drops wherever
  • Plugging in devices that were borrowed so they charge
  • Clearing dirty dishes from the table
  • Hanging up coats on the floor right by the closet
  • Picking up shoes piled next to the shoe shelves
  • Throwing away food trash left by the microwave (in our case, next to the trash can)
  • Picking up crayons, pencils, and pens
  • Putting toys back in the toy box…all two feet from where they toys were laying
  • Stowing food that was left on the counter after snack prep

  1. Oh I hear you on this one! Although my two are still only little I could already write my own list and the toys next to the toy box one would be right up there! I am finding that the eldest is becoming more helpful around the house though – she loves setting the table for example. Now, if I can just get her to hit the laundry basket with her throws….

    • I think the trick was to teach my kids from early on that they needed to help around the house. Considering that I failed miserably with the first seven, Hectic 12 (our youngest) is getting the brunt of my newfound enthusiasm for household chores. Hectic Grandson is actually quite a bit of help, despite his tender 13 months under his belt. He’s been great and I think I may have figured out how to start him on the right track. At least that’s what I’m hoping!

Good luck on the laundry basket aim, you never know when it might come in handy in basketball, team handball, or beer pong…
