Excellent Video Series from the BBC: The State Within

,I started watching this series somewhat on a fluke. It was expiring on Netflix at the end of the month, and despite not knowing anything about it, the description looked interesting. Somewhat as expected for a BBC production, the British Ambassador to the U.S. is the hero of the story. The series only lasts 7 episodes, so it’s relatively fast-paced and short. The writing is very tight, and the series is easy to watch…although you do have to pay attention to who the characters interact with. There are many of twists and turns with a plot that’s quite a bit of fun.

The State Within is a great mini-series with excellent acting, a superb plot, and solid cinematography. Quite honestly I wish that the series had continued past the seven episodes.

Jason Isaacs, playing the part of Mark Brydon (the British Ambassador to the U.S.) is spectacular. I have had a hard time like Isaacs ever since he play Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series. In The State Within he’s a very believable character. He has his faults, and his human qualities, making him all the more likable. He gets to play the part of an action hero to some extent, and pulls it off nicely.

The other cast members do a great job in their roles as well. I don’t want to ruin the plot for you, but suffice it to say that there is a lot of intrigue revolving around a terrorist situation, an Asia pseudo-dictatorship, private military contractors, and both the U.S. and British governments. Lots of action too.

In short, this is one of the best mini-series I think I’ve ever seen. Highly recommended.
